Foundational Learning Skills

Access to quality basic education is a right of every global citizen. In Uganda, this has remained a dream for many whereby 83% of children aged 10 years cannot read an age-appropriate text. Most of these children are in rural areas where families are entrenched in poverty thus making their hope for social-economic recovery through education very fragile.

JM Education and Research Centre (JMERC) exists to provide all children in Uganda with opportunities to learn, achieve and thrive. By building literacy and numeracy skills alongside transferable skills, and by parents, community leaders, policymakers and other NGOs to use this highly effective methodology, we are building the foundation for systemic change in education and paving a sustainable path toward ending learning poverty.

JMERC partners with primary schools in rural communities in Uganda, focusing on teacher capacity development to use inclusive and gender-responsive teaching and learning methodologies and use formative assessment data to group learners according to their competence levels. We develop enabling school ecosystems and empower and engage parents and community leaders so they become champions of children's learning. Our goal is to eliminate learning gaps and ultimately see all children learn, achieve and thrive, irrespective of their social and economic background.
